Last week I was hit hard by the realization that summer has come to an end, and fall was beginning.
Here in the pacific northwest it was a dramatic transition. One day it was 85 degrees and we were hanging out at the beach. Summer weather. The next day it was 60 degrees, pouring rain, and the falling leaves had changed colors without me even noticing. Fall had snuck up on me. We went from swimsuits to sweaters in a matter of hours.
Although gorgeous 70 degree weather has found us again, today was the first day of preschool for my 4-year-old Owen. Then the other boys officially start their parent partnership next week. We are looking forward to a new season, with more structure and learning time.
For me fall is a perfect time for goal-setting and new beginnings.
It was a hard summer for us this year, and I have kind of been in mourning over the fact that I wasn’t able to enjoy it to the fullest. So to get myself ready for fall, for a new beginning I got out my planner. When I opened the pages I made sure that I had my goals in mind about how I want my life to be, starting this fall. I planned out my days and weeks. Then I sat back and reflected on how I can find joy in my life despite the cold dark days that are to come.
The next step was to prepare my home.
In the spring it’s lilacs, and in the summer the hydrangeas that bring life to my home. I am able to find them right outside my door and bring them back in to fill an otherwise empty vase. Since that season is over, instead, I rounded up my big little helpers and we worked together on having fall bring life into our home. We rummaged through boxes in our storage room and found treasures from years past. Then that joy I was searching for was found. Not just through the things, but the journey. The memories of years past, and the memories we will continue to create. The time I spent with my children as we decorated. Watching their excitement for the next season to come, our next season as a family.
Now I can’t help but look around and smile.
And I am so excited to have the opportunity to share that little bit of us with you. I am honored to be able to be a part of a Festive Fall Home Tour with several other bloggers. I am also grateful to Chatham Hill on the Lake and Dragonfly and Lily Pads for hosting. On September 21 we will all be invited into all of their homes. I am looking forward to see how they capture the beauty of the season, and why I can fall in love with it. Rain and all.
I hope you all will join with me. Until then, I would love if you would share with me your favorite part of Autumn, and why it brings you happiness.
