Did you know that your skin is the largest organ in your body?
For those of you who know me, and see me on a daily basis you already know that I don’t often wear makeup. A big part of that reason is because my body has been overloaded with toxins. I did a major detox a few years ago after getting really sick. Now I just can’t bring myself to put things on my skin that could possibly be overloaded with chemicals. Although I learned healthy habits at a young age, everything in my environment started catching up with me.
I have been looking for beauty products I can trust for the past 3 years, and extensively for the last year. Part of that search included trying to find a company where all of its products were EWG certified. Wait, are you wondering what in the world EWG stands for? The ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING GROUP helps consumers understand what is in the products they buy. I don’t know about you, but I can’t even pronounce half of the ingredients in beauty products today? It’s not just me, right? I finally found what I was looking for! It’s one word. BeautyCounter.
The EWG makes it easy. You can look up a certain product you want to buy and look it up in their system. Say you want to buy sunscreen, you just type it into their search box and they will tell you which brands are the safest. They will even point out which ingredients are not so good for you. The best part is that they even have a handy app! You can even scan the product to make it easier to find in the system! When I found out about it I started looking up pretty much everything we own. 🙂 Okay, maybe not everything, but it is not just for personal care products, it is for food too. Don’t worry I’m sure you won’t spend hours researching things on there like I did. If you do, I apologize in advance, but not really… 😉
Okay, back to beauty products! When it comes to what I put on my face, I prefer a natural look.
Makeup that doesn’t really look like makeup. I want my freckles to show through, and my blemishes to disappear. That’s not too much to ask, right?
When I was in high school and college I refused to go out into public unless I was wearing my makeup. I only wore eye makeup, some concealer around my eyes and lip gloss (bright pink of course.) But I felt naked without it, and vulnerable. I hated how blonde my eyelashes are and felt like I needed the mascara. Sometimes I felt like I was hiding behind it. I was worried about what others would think about me.
I don’t know if confidence comes with age, or experience, or both. Although there are still many many times that I feel like that self-conscious girl again, and I am wanting someone to notice me and my accomplishments, it is so much different. Beauty comes from within, but to feel good you need to treat your body right.
When I met my husband he told me that I didn’t need makeup.
He didn’t say I shouldn’t wear makeup, he simply told me that I am the same person inside no matter what I put on my face. Although at times he has said that some girls definitely do need it, I was not one of them. I tend to disagree with him. I think that everyone has an inner beauty, some just are afraid to let it shine. Afraid like I was, hiding behind the makeup.
I truly believe that makeup can add to that inner beauty we all have.
It can make us feel more beautiful and it is when we feel good about ourselves that we can shine. We can do incredible things.
I have always been what I like to call a tom-boy girly girl. I want to be strong, I want to be capable. But I also love to dress up, to feel glamorous and bring out my inner Audrey Hepburn. I know it is possible to be both. It is possible to be real AND wear makeup. It is possible to be all you want to be. And do you know the amazing part? What you want to be is going to be different than what I want to be. And do you know what is even more incredible? That is what makes our world so interesting. I love meeting people that are different than I am. I can learn so much from them, and I hope they can learn from me too.
But it is much more than makeup. So much more! It’s about FAMILIES too.
My kids have extremely sensitive skin, a gene passed down from my side of the family. All of them had exczema as babies and the only body wash they would not have a bad reaction to was Cetaphil. Although it is gentle, it is still filled with harmful chemicals. The packaging and advertising has always suggested otherwise.
But sensitive skin isn’t the only thing I worry about with my kids. In 2016 we are surrounded by chemicals, and they can do more harm than anyone ever thought to be possible. We have a son who is highly sensitive and has several food allergies. I believe they would not have been there if he had been born hundreds of years ago, before we let science take over every aspect of our lives.
It is not just about the BeautyCounter brand, or even the products. It is about being a voice for change.
The industry as a whole doesn’t have any regulation. You may buy a baby shampoo marked as “natural” and “organic” and never know it is also filled with harmful chemicals.
What about shampoo? Lotion? Sunscreen? Even small things we sometimes take for granted like chapstick. I chose BeautyCounter because it offers all of those things. This way I am able to care for myself, and my family, so that we can not only grow together, but we can thrive together. I tried my first few products and made the decision to become a consultant on the same day. That is how excited I am about this company!
Direct sales are not really my thing, like not at all.
I don’t want someone to feel like I am pushing them to buy something they don’t really want. I’m not saying all direct sales are like that. I just have a hard time selling to friends, or anyone at all for that matter. The reason I am telling you about this is because I WANT TO SHARE! I love learning new things and when I do sharing with others gives me so much joy. That’s why I started a blog in the first place. Want to learn about photography? Goats? Homeschooling? Raising boys? I will tell you everything I know! I’m not saying I know everything, not even close. I believe we can learn so much from each other.
It is right for me, but that doesn’t mean it is right for you.
I always recommend that you do your own research. Try different products, learn about the companies that sell them, and make an informed choice. A choice that will bring you peace of mind.
My friend Nikki is one of the most passionate people I have ever met. She is an Arbonne consultant and lives it heart and soul. She has decided that health is her mantra, and is going to school to be a health coach. That way she can do even more to help her loved ones and clients be the best they can be. I look up to her and am always inspired by her. Although I decided that Arbonne wasn’t right for me, it might be right for you. Either way, follow her instagram for daily quotes and inspiration.
I also know a few people who sell Younique. Check out their company and see what they are all about. They focus on cosmetics and have a lot of variety. If you decide you want to buy from their company I will get you in touch with one of them.
I am all about supporting each other, and supporting small businesses, especially when someone is doing what they love.
I don’t want to just sell to you, I want to inform you, I want to share with you, I want you to know what I know.
I want to make informed decisions together. I want to share excitement over new products that are going to change my life. Products that can change your life. A company that has a vision and can change an industry. A better future for my children.
Sorry, I always get sappy. But for real… “Be the change you want to see in the world” – Ghandi
